Reel Handler Attachment (RHA) Operating Instructions

Warning bhs sign (1).JPG

FAILURE TO KNOW, UNDERSTAND AND FOLLOW THESE OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS COULD LEAD TO SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.

OPERATIONAL SAFETY:

  • Read and understand the forklift operator’s manual about transporting loads prior to using this device.
  • Only personnel trained in the proper and safe usage of RHA units may use this device.
  • All warning labels shall be in place and legible at all times. Remove RHA from service if any label is defaced or not legible. Contact you dealer or BHS Technical Support 1.877.BHS.4YOU (1.877.247.4968) for replacement warning labels or instructions.
  • All users and service personnel shall be familiar with the meaning of all warning labels and any risks associated with the use of this device. *All operators and service personnel shall be aware of potential crush and shear points while using the attachment. See Figures 1 - 4.
  • Keep hands, arms, feet, legs, hair, and jewelry clear of the reel (and its contents) and the RHA stops while loading and unloading the attachment.
  • Ensure the reel is secure and properly centered on the attachment prior to lifting or transporting.
  • Properly secure the attachment chain to the host truck fork prior to lifting or transporting.
  • Avoid abrupt changes in direction when transporting a reel on the attachment to prevent loss of the reel and/or loss of control of the lift truck and attachment.
  • Inspect the attachment before use. Remove the device from service if it (or its components) is damaged, excessively worn, operating improperly (or becomes such while operating) or is missing any parts until repairs can be made to correct any problem(s).
  • Use the attachment only with reels that are in sound structural condition.
  • Inspect the mast and forks of the lift truck for damage and verify the lift/lower mechanisms operate correctly and smoothly without binding prior to using the RHA.
  • Travel with the RHA as low to the ground as possible.
  • Ensure reach mechanism is retracted on reach trucks before traveling with the RHA.

DO’s AND DON’T’s:

  • DO NOT exceed the maximum capacity of attachment.
  • ONLY USE the attachment on a lift truck with a capacity equal to or greater than the maximum capacity of the attachment.
  • DO NOT use the attachment to handle reels larger than 60” (1524 mm) in diameter.
  • DO NOT modify the attachment without prior, written approval from BHS.
  • DO NOT perform any maintenance or service to the attachment with a reel loaded on the attachment.
  • DO NOT allow anyone to ride on the attachment.
  • DO NOT use the attachment in a manner for which it is not intended. Some examples of prohibited use are but not limited to:
  • To transport people
  • As a vehicle jack
  • To lift loads greater than its rated load capacity
  • As fork extensions
  • DO NOT operate the attachment within 20’ of any personnel.
  • Check for overhead obstructions prior to lifting reel into rack position.
  • DO NOT lift or transport a reel without the auxiliary stop securely in place.
  • DO NOT tilt the mast forward or backward at anytime while lifting or transporting a reel with the RHA.

USAGE INSTRUCTIONS

The following instructions will guide you through the basic steps necessary to attach, load, and unload the RHA device.

ATTACHING THE RHA TO HOST LIFT TRUCK:

  1. Set the fork width of lift truck to accept the width of the attachment’s fork pocket span. This is approximately 20” (508 mm). Center the forks left-to-right on the mast. Once properly located, lock the forks into position with the detent pins (if equipped).
  2. Pull the lift truck into position and drive the forks into the attachment fork pockets. The forks should be fully engaged with the fork pockets so that no usable part of the forks is visible at the heel (mast end.) See Figure 1.

    FIGURE 1

  4. Once in position, connect the attachment chain to the fork to prevent unintentional movement of the attachment during load transfers. Make sure the chain does not interfere with any moving or sliding components of the mast or forks. Engage the snap hook into the hole of the attachment chain mounting channel completely so the spring latch is fully closed. See Figure 2.

  6. Once attached, raise the unit off the floor and verify attachment securely mounted and stable.

LOADING A REEL ON THE RHA:

  1. Remove the front auxiliary stop. Slowly drive the attachment under the reel between the reel flanges, ensuring the attachment clears the reel’s contents. If the attachment will not fit under the reel’s contents, proceed to Step 2. If the attachment clears the contents, proceed to Step 3.
  2. If the attachment will not fit under the reel (or reel contents), carefully roll the reel onto the attachment.
  3. Once the reel fully contacts the rear fixed stop, place the removable front stop into the tightest pin position that will allow the stop to fully engage and sit flat on the top surface of the attachment forks. See Figure 3.
  4. NOTE: The RHA is equipped with a 34” and a 40” wide stop. Select the appropriate stop for the stand the reel is to be loaded into. Warning bhs sign (2).JPG DO NOT USE IF FRONT STOP DOES NOT FULLY ENGAGE AND DOES NOT SIT FLAT. SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH WILL OCCUR.

    FIGURE 3

  5. Once the stop is properly in place, slowly lift the reel until the full weight of the load is supported by the RHA. Adjust the mast tilt rearward until the RHA is level.
  6. Warning bhs sign (1).JPG FAILURE TO TILT THE MAST REARWARD TO LEVEL THE RHA DUE TO FORK DEFLECTION WHEN LOADED OR TILTING THE MAST FORWARD ONCE THE FORKS HAVE BEEN LEVELED FOR FORK DEFLECTION WHILE LOADED COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF THE LOAD AND/OR RHA, SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.
  7. Verify the reel is secure on the attachment while standing in a safe position.
  8. Warning bhs sign (1).JPG IF ANY MOVEMENT OR INSTABILITY IS EVIDENT, IMMEDIATELY LOWER THE LOAD BACK TO THE FLOOR AND REPOSITION THE REEL AND/OR FRONT STOP AS REQUIRED.
  9. Once the load is secure, proceed with the normal loading procedure for the product in accordance with company policies and practices.

REMOVAL OF A REEL FROM THE RHA:

  1. Lower reel to the floor. If the reel moves away from front removable stop, proceed to Step 6. If the reel requires additional elevation to allow safe removal of the front stop, proceed to Step 2.
  2. Lower the load within 3”-4” (76-102 mm) of the floor.
  3. Remove the reel riser blocks and position them under the reel flanges on each side of reel. See Figure 4.
  4. caption

    FIGURE 4

  5. Lower the reel onto the riser blocks to take the load off the front removable stop. See Figure 5.
  6. caption

    FIGURE 5

  7. Verify both sides are securely nested inside the riser blocks.
  8. Fully lower the attachment and remove the front stop.
  9. Remove the load as required.
