Overhead Reel Lifter (ORL) Operating Instructions

Warning bhs sign (1).JPG

FAILURE TO KNOW, UNDERSTAND AND FOLLOW THESE OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS COULD LEAD TO SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.

OPERATIONAL SAFETY:

  • Read and understand the forklift operator’s manual about transporting loads prior to using this device.
  • Only personnel trained in the proper and safe usage of RHA units may use this device.
  • All warning labels shall be in place and legible at all times. Remove RHA from service if any label is defaced or not legible. Contact you dealer or BHS Technical Support 1.877.BHS.4YOU (1.877.247.4968) for replacement warning labels or instructions.
  • All users and service personnel shall be familiar with the meaning of all warning labels and any risks associated with the use of this device.
  • All operators and service personnel shall be aware of potential crush and shear points while using the attachment. See Figures 1, 2 & 4.
  • Keep hands and fingers clear of the reel (and its contents) and the ORL stops while loading and unloading the attachment.
  • Ensure the attachment hooks are secure on the reel axle and axle extends evenly beyond both hooks prior to lifting or transporting.
  • Properly secure the attachment chain to the host truck fork prior to lifting or transporting.
  • Avoid abrupt changes in direction when transporting a reel on the attachment to prevent loss of the reel and/or loss of control of the lift truck and attachment.
  • Inspect the attachment before use. Remove the device from service if it (or its components) is damaged, excessively worn, operating improperly (or becomes such while operating) or is missing any parts until repairs can be made to correct any problem(s).
  • Use the attachment only with reels that are in sound structural condition.
  • Use the attachment only with reel axles that are in sound structural condition and of adequate size/ strength for the size & weight of the reel to be handled.
  • Inspect the mast and forks of the lift truck for damage and verify the lift/lower mechanisms operate correctly and smoothly without binding prior to using the ORL.
  • Travel with the ORL or spool as low to the ground as possible.
  • Ensure reach mechanism is retracted on reach trucks before traveling with the ORL.

DO’s AND DON’T’s:

  • DO NOT exceed the maximum capacity of attachment.
  • ONLY USE the attachment on a lift truck with a capacity equal to or greater than the maximum capacity of the attachment.
  • DO NOT use the attachment to handle reels larger than 60” (1524 mm) in diameter.
  • DO NOT modify the attachment without prior, written approval from BHS.
  • DO NOT perform any maintenance or service to the attachment with a reel loaded on the attachment.
  • DO NOT allow anyone to ride on the attachment.
  • DO NOT use the attachment in a manner for which it is not intended. Some examples of prohibited use are but not limited to:
  • To transport people
  • As a vehicle jack
  • To lift loads greater than its rated load capacity
  • DO NOT operate the attachment within 20’ of any personnel (except when ensuring hooks are properly engaged with the reel axle prior to lifting)
  • Check for overhead obstructions prior to lifting reel.
  • Ensure the chains are in the same relative keyhole positions on each side of the ORL (i.e. outside, center or inside keyhole) prior to lifting a reel.
  • Ensure both lifting chains are on the same load member (i.e. front or rear) prior to lifting a reel.
  • Ensure both lifting chains are adjusted the same length with the hooks facing forward prior to lifting a reel.
  • DO NOT tilt the mast forward or backward at anytime while lifting or transporting a reel with the ORL.
  • DO NOT lift any reel that appears damaged and ALWAYS inspect the axle in reel before attaching the hooks.

USAGE INSTRUCTIONS

The following instructions will guide you through the basic steps necessary to attach, load, and unload the RHA device.

ATTACHING THE ORL TO HOST LIFT TRUCK:

  1. Set the fork width of the lift truck to accept the width of the attachment’s fork pocket span. This is approximately 20” (508 mm). Center the forks left-to-right on the mast. Once properly located, lock the forks into position with the detent pins (if equipped.)
  2. Pull the lift truck into position and drive the forks into the attachment fork pockets. The forks should be fully engaged with the fork pockets so that no usable part of the forks is visible at the heel (mast end.) See Figure 1.

    FIGURE 1

  4. Once in position, connect the attachment chain to the fork to prevent unintentional movement of the attachment during load transfers. Make sure the chain does not interfere with any moving or sliding components of the mast or forks. Engage the snap hook into the hole of the attachment chain mounting channel completely so the spring latch is fully closed. See Figure 2.
  5. Once attached, raise the unit off the floor and verify attachment is securely mounted and stable.

LIFTING A REEL WITH THE ORL:

  1. Adjust the width of the lifting chains to the narrowest position while still hanging vertical with the reel to be lifted and long enough for the tip of the hooks to clear the bottom of the reel axle when pulling up to the reel. See Figure 3-1 thru 3-6 on the following page.
  2. NOTE: Be sure the chains are in the same relative keyhole positions on each side of the ORL and the hooks are facing forward when free-hanging prior to engaging the hooks with the axle. Only 60” spools should be handled from the front chain adjustment positions.
    Warning bhs sign (1).JPG
FAILURE TO PROPERLY ADJUST LIFT CHAINS COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF THE LOAD, SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.
  3. With the ORL at the approximate height for the hook tips to clear the axle, slowly pull forward until the hooks contact the axle. Slowly raise the ORL ensuring the hooks properly engage the reel axle. See Figure 4.
  4. USAGE INSTRUCTIONS

    IOP-ORL-OPERATING-INSTRUCTIONS-5-instruction-usage.jpg

NOTE: It may be necessary to have someone assist in aligning and/or steadying the hooks as the ORL is raised to ensure the hooks properly engage the reel axle. Once the hooks are properly engaged, any personnel must exit the immediate area prior to lifting the reel.

    Warning bhs sign (1).JPG

PERSONNEL ASSISTING IN HOOK ENGAGEMENT MUST BE AWARE OF POTENTIAL PINCH/ CRUSH POINTS BETWEEN HOOK, CHAIN, REEL, AND AXLE AT ALL TIMES.

  5. Once the hooks are properly engaged, slowly lift the reel until the full weight of the load is supported by the ORL. Adjust the mast tilt rearward until the ORL is level.
  6. IOP-ORL-OPERATING-INSTRUCTIONS-6-figure-4.jpg
    Warning bhs sign (1).JPG
FAILURE TO TILT THE MAST REARWARD TO LEVEL THE ORL DUE TO FORK DEFLECTION WHEN LOADED OR TILTING THE MAST FORWARD ONCE THE FORKS HAVE BEEN LEVELED FOR FORK DEFLECTION WHILE LOADED COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF THE LOAD AND/OR ORL, SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.
  7. Slowly lift the reel high enough to remove it from its shipping structure.
  8. Once clear of the shipping structure, slowly lower the reel to the floor.
  9. Ensure the reel is secure and cannot roll prior to disengaging the hooks from the reel axle.
  10. NOTE: Due to the size of the reel, the amount of the product on the reel, and/or the type of product on the reel, it may be necessary to place the reel on the RHA riser blocks to allow the reel to be loaded onto an RHA. See RHA instruction manual for proper RHA use.
  11. Once the reel is secure, slowly lower the ORL until the hooks disengage from the reel axle and slowly back away from the reel.
  12. Remove the ORL from the lift truck, attach the RHA and transport the reel as instructed per the RHA instruction manual.
